Elementary School Principal, K-8


Arthur D. Healey School

The Somerville Public Schools extends an invitation to outstanding progressive educators to apply for the position of School Principal for the Arthur D. Healey Elementary School. The Healey School is a richly diverse and dynamic K-8 school of 525 students, 34 classroom teachers, full range of specialists and special education teachers, and 14 paraprofessionals. The school has a full administrative support team, including a full-time Assistant Principal. The Healey School offers a wide range of extracurricular and support services. Healey students are supported with emotional and social issues through on-site counseling, student mediation, and a strong alliance with Somerville Mental Health. The school is a demonstration site for the Global Institute for Student Aspirations. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate expertise in elementary school administration and a comprehensive understanding of current trends and research in elementary curriculum. The position requires excellent leadership and communication skills, including the ability to build consensus, work with parents and the community-at-large, and invite participation by all in a learning community.

The Healey School features an innovative, student-centered learning environment with looping, mixed grades and flexible grouping arrangements. Healey faculty are committed an experiential learning experience for all students with an emphasis on project-based learning and a variety out-of-school learning experiences. Strong university and community connections are core values, with a history of strong democratic participation in school decision-making and high levels of parent/guardian involvement in many school activities.

Qualifications:

w Minimum of a Master’s degree;

w Evidence of at least (5) years of successful teaching and/or administrative experience;

w Must hold or be eligible for Massachusetts department of elementary and secondary education licensure as an Elementary School Principal, Gr.K-8.

Duties:

w As outlined in the job description, a copy of which is attached.

Terms of employment:

w Twelve (12) month work year;

w Annual salary will be a minimum of $100,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications;

w Benefit package is negotiable and regionally competitive.
