Teaching is the profession that teaches all the other professions. ~ Author Unknown

My goal is to reveal one teacher's humble journey of self-reflection, critical analysis, and endless questioning about my craft of teaching and learning alongside my middle school students.

"The dream begins with a teacher who believes in you, who tugs and pushes and leads you to the next plateau, sometimes poking you with a sharp stick called 'truth'." ~ Dan Rather

REACH JOB ANNOUNCEMENT:
ACADEMIC DEAN FOR ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS

REACH Program: Founded by Regis High School in 2002, REACH prepares high-achieving boys
from low-income families to win scholarships at Regis and other top Catholic high schools in New York
City.  REACH currently serves 90 students in grades 6th through 8th in its summer, fall Saturday and
spring Saturday sessions.  At any given time, REACH students attend more than 50 different parochial
and public grammar schools throughout the city.  REACH also strives to support 206 alumni now
attending high school or college.  In keeping with the 450-year old Jesuit educational tradition that
honors cura personalis, REACH serves its students and alumni by caring for their intellectual, spiritual,
emotional and social development.

Position Description: The Academic Dean for English Language Arts (ELA) teaches in both the
REACH and Regis English programs, coordinates the ongoing development of the REACH ELA
curriculum, leads the REACH ELA faculty, coordinates the winter reading projects and serves as a
student advisor to REACH students.  As a member of the REACH administrative team, the Academic
Dean also assists with the general administration of REACH throughout the year and assumes other
responsibilities as needed.  These teaching and administrative responsibilities require the Academic
Dean to be available for the 6-week REACH summer session—including both the 3-week residential
program at the University of Scranton and the 3-week day program at Regis—and on 15 REACH
Saturdays throughout the school year.  As a member of the Regis English Department, the Academic
Dean teaches one or two high school courses each year.  This is a 12-month position with a targeted start
date of June 15, 2012.

Qualifications: Qualified candidates for this position will hold at least a bachelor’s degree in English or
a related field; possess at least 2-3 years of classroom teaching experience at the high school or middle
school level; and have prior experience that demonstrates a commitment to the REACH mission.  A
master’s degree, experience teaching high-achieving students, a background working with immigrant
families and familiarity with the Jesuit tradition of education are preferred.

Application Process: Interested persons should download an application from the REACH page on the
Regis High School website, www.regis-nyc.org/reach.  The application can be found under the Job
Openings section.  Please return a cover letter and your completed application to Mrs. Aida Mergeche,
the Secretary to the Search Committee.  Cover letters and completed applications sent by email may be
directed to amergeche@regis-nyc.org. The application deadline for this position is March 31, 2012.

Regis High School is an equal opportunity employer and complies with all federal, state and local laws
which prohibit discrimination in employment based on race, color, national origin, age (18 or older), gender,
religion, disability, marital status, sexual orientation, veteran status and arrest record.
