My goal is to reveal one teacher's humble journey of self-reflection, critical analysis, and endless questioning about my craft of teaching and learning alongside my middle school students.

A Little Pat on the Back

OK, I know I'm guilty of already anonymously publishing some former student emails here, but I cannot resist posting this latest one. This note comes from a student I had the pleasure of teaching two years in a row as a seventh and eighth grader. She is now a sophomore in high school excelling at one of the top magnet programs in the country and continues to make me proud.

Just another small reason why I have the best job in the world!

It's been such a long time, but I wanted to share something with you! During lunch today, I was interviewed along with three other sophmores. We weren't sure what it would be about, but they just asked questions about our school careers during the years we've been at [our school system]. They asked us to list teachers who stood out to us, courses we took that stood out to us, and a teacher that we felt took a special interest in us.

Well, of course, I mentioned you all those three times! I told them how you took the time to help all of us and how we could tell you really did care about us, much beyond our grades. It made me miss english class and reminded me how grateful I am to have come across a teacher like you! Your class really did change my school career, and to this day I haven't had a better english teacher. Thanks for everything you did to help me; thank you so much! I hope you let me come visit soon!

An old and greatful student with love,
Katherine =)

And I can only hope she visits me soon! Little does she know how much she taught ME as well.
